Come September 28, 2011, I embark on an amazing journey as the co-writer and artist on The New 52 relaunch of The Flash for DC Comics. To say I'm beyond exhilarated is an understatement. With me for the ride is my co-writer and color artist Brian Buccellato. In the spirit of brevity and speed I'll just let these interviews do the talking. Looking forward to entertaining you folks with Barry Allen's adventure over the years!

Flash Forward

As some of you I'm sure have noticed I didn't draw the recently released Flash #11. I'm disappointed that I didn't get to finish this story arc. However, in order to get the last 2 issues out before Flashpoint they had to be done in an impossible time frame that there was no way I could do it without the work suffering. Talking to my editors we felt it wasn't the right situation for me, and that we should begin developing my next project. That said, I will state on the record that I've never had an issue with turning in my work and editorial has never had a problem with me. I may have stumbled a bit out of the gate as I was on the road filming during my first 3-4 issues of the Flash, but with the lead time we had we were able to avoid any major delays. I take my normal 4-5 weeks to pencil, ink, and watercolor a book which is the standard time everybody gets just to pencil it. Much of the delays were due to the multiple stops and starts in the work process that is completely out of my hands. Hopefully I won't have to address this issue again, but I just felt the need to clarify to try and avoid further vilification.

Moving forward my next project at DC is in the works. I'm EXTREMELY EXCITED about it, and my editors enthusiasm and endless support has been great! I've been developing it with my collaborator and editorial soon after my last issue of the Flash. Hopefully if all goes well, we can get started on doing the new book in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime I've done a few covers for Flashpoint as well as other DC titles, I also ended up contributing 5 pages for Flash 12 to help close out the series.

I'm so jazzed about the future and my next project, I think a lot of people will be too. I appreciate the fans that's stuck with me through this time and patiently waited. I really feel that the best is yet to come, and that 2011 will be an even bigger year for me. Thanks for reading!

Kid Flash 2 cover Process

I haven't done one of these in a while so I figured I'd do another one seeing as how this process I'm about to show is a new one for me. I recently got a cintiq and have been using that to create commercial illustrations but haven't had a chance to incorporate it with my comic book work. With a bit of time on my hands I thought I'd try it out on this cover.

The first initial stage as always are my layouts.

This second stage which is something new for me. I decided to "pencil" my page digitally. It allowed me to put a proper vanishing point for the buildings and make sure it's precise. It also allowed me to create some very nice curved lines for Hot Pursuits helmet. Although old habits die hard, using the grid, I started another layer and free handed the buildings.

I then "penciled" in the figure and I was able to change his orientation from the initial layout, and I was also able to play around with his size until I was happy with the placement.

I then simple printed the linework very, VERY, VERY lightly on my art board that it's almost invisible. It's visible enough that I can see whats there, but once it was painted you pretty much cant see it at all. It allowed for a very clean painting process and very streamlined. I used two different colors on this, ivory black, and sepia for the reflection.

After the painting process I scanned the art in, and I played around with the color scheme of the cover. I always do this for Brian Buccellato (colorist) just so that he has a jumping off point for how I want the colors to look. It also makes the colors layed under the watercolor look more cohesive and less muddy since it's not colors under black. I also fixed the lightning bolt on his chest, I had drawn it "normally" and not a reflection.

Hey folks long time since I've updated this site. As you can tell a LOT of exciting things have been happening over the past year, and unfortunately I've been very slow on updating my site. But that said if you're on Twitter give me a follow as I'm on there quite frequently and you can get more up to date info on what I'm up to.

On April 1st to the 3rd I'll be attending WonderCon in San Francisco. I'll post my schedule below so you'll know where to find me.

Regarding Commissions at the show the only place to get those would be at the Hero Initiative booth which I'll be doing for donations to a great cause! New York Comic Con

Hey folks just wanted to post up my schedule for the upcoming New York Comic Con this weekend. I'll be dividing my time between my artist alley table at #A6 and the DC Comics booth at #2243, as well as a short appearance at the Hero Initiative booth #333. Wow what a con! The response to The Flash has been great! Thanks to everyone that made this quite a memorable year! The "How To" panel with Whilce went great the room was packed and was standing room only! The fans were great, thank you all for stopping by my artist alley table it was really great to talk to all of you! Here are a couple of interviews that I did during the con. There are more but I'll edit and post an update as they come in.

Bleedingcool with Rich Johnston (although he's sneaky didn't realize he was already recording :) it's the third interview from the bottom. Also did an interview with the Asian Journal although ignore that headshot of me it seems they digitally gave me a facelift of some sort, my face is beyond recognition ;). Kinda funny actually. Also a correction in the article. I wasn't initially hired as an art director. I was always hired as on camera talent, it just expanded from 6 days of shooting in a limited role, to more than half a year of shooting in a main one. Moving on....

Today the 4th issue of The Flash arrives in stores, and it's quite a fantastic issue! Geoff really pushed the action on this one, and I truly believe that we made the Flash do something I have never seen done before! Very excited for you guys to read the issue!

After you've read your issue of The Flash #4 you can sit back and relax and watch (if you're in Canada) the 4th episode of Beast Legends! In this episode the team travels from Mongolia all the way to Germany to learn more about the Griffin and create one bad ass beast! 10 pm tonight on History Television Canada!

Beast Legends Premiere's Tonight!

In the series opener myself and Steve Leonard travel to Vietnam to investigate the Vietnamese Wildman, better known to us as the Sasquatch or Big Foot. So as the air date comes closer, a little more info is out there about the show. History Televisions site has episode break downs along with the air dates and time.

Here's how they describe the first episode:

In the remote and unexplored forests of Vietnam, the team hears about the existence of a Wildman - a giant, hairy Beast that has echoes of North America's Bigfoot. A highly-decorated Vietnam Veteran claims to have seen the creature close at hand. The team retraces his steps and encounters a forgotten land where new and hidden species are only now being discovered.

It's looking like after the new episodes air on Wednesday nights at 10 pm, it will be re running the episodes another 4 times that week. Groovy! I guess be prepared to see more of my beastly mug! Apologies in advance ;)

Sketches for Pledges help out Sick Kids

Hey folks I just wanted to let everyone know that on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, Agnes (www.mymisiu.com), myself along with a few others will be sketching for pledges to benefit the Sick Kids Hospital. I encourage anyone who is a fan of my work, Agnes', or comic fans in general please head on by. I'll sign your books and give you sketches! And in return we get to help out a good cause. Here's more info on the event:

A group of artists are getting together to draw sketches to help raise funds for Sick Kids Hospital, on behalf of the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC).

Artists that will be appearing are: Agnes Garbowska (Girls Comics#1 (Marvel Comics), Francis Manapul (The Flash (DC Comics), Daniel Wong ( McHozer Studios), and from Spent Pencil Studios: Briana Chan, Vince Sunico, Paul Limgenco, Gerard De La Costa, Khanh Nguyen and Arnold Trinidad. And last but not least, Marvin Law (Conquer Entertainment) will be there!

Two more artists just added to the line up: “Gogz” and “Marv”, both from Powie Studios.

Super Mega Update! The Flash! Wonder Woman! JLA! Beast Legends!

Happy Canada Day fellow Canucks! This update is long overdue! Things have taken quite an interesting turn with regards to my life and work which has prevented me from regular updates here (But you can follow me on twitter at http://twitter.com/FrancisManapul which I regularly update). It's been a very amazing year thus far, and we're only half way in! The launch of The Flash #1 with Geoff Johns was phenomenal, and we really appreciate the support that the readers, retailers and reviewers alike have shown us! Thank YOU! The book has been amazing to work on, and we'll continue to deliver you the best Flash book you can get! ( The Flash #3 comes out this week! June 30th!!)

This was a big week, also released was Wonder Woman 600 to which I contributed a pin up too, as well as my variant cover to JLA 46! Be sure to check those out at your local retailer!

You can also find me at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con July 21^st – 25^th. I have a few more convention appearances in the upcoming months which I’ll update you guys all on, including the Toronto Fan Expo in August, as well as Jet city comic con in Seattle in September. I’ll post up more detailed info closer to the date.

Aside from my current work at DC Comics I was also lucky enough to have had some new opportunities this year. Namely on a show called Beast Legends which will begin airing on History Television in Canada on Wednesdays 10pm starting July 7th. and later on SyFy in the US. I'll be one of the presenters on the show, which is quite a departure from my day job! But the best part about it is that I'm actually using my real profession and applying it to science!

It's been an amazing experience traveling around the world on these magnificent adventures! I felt like Indiana Jones or something! Even had run ins with some snakes! I've drawn in some of the most bizarre places, from the dense jungles of Vietnam, to a platform above sharks in the Bahamas, to a dark and wet lions cave in Germany, to the high seas of New Zealand! It's truly been an experience and I'm glad I'll be able to share them with you! Now here's the official press release for the show:

Adventure Comics 6 Finale Preview! And more updates!!

Hey folks been ages since I've updated this thing! I've been incredibly swamped with work and my travels. I just wanted to give a big thanks to all those that made the trip to Belgium and France a fantastic experience! Can't say thank you enough to all the organizers and the shop owners for their incredible hospitality!

Anyways back to business! This issue concludes Geoff and I's run on the book with a 30 page long story. It was an amazing ride and we'll sorely miss working on the book. I'll definitely miss
drawing Krypto! Here's a sneak peek at the book which comes out on sale January 13, 2010!

I'm still drawing him too young though and has more of a Wally vibe since he's who I've been drawing all my life. Hope to get it right by the time I start the book. Came out today....I think. With this past Monday being a holiday some stores may have not gotten their shipments yet but some were pretty lucky and got it today. Either way here's a peek at a page from the issue. Also there's been a lot of hubub the last day or so about my moving on to the Flash, let it be said that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Adventure Comics and wished I was able to do both but unfortunately I can't make a clone of myself. I'm very excited to be drawing the Flash since it's a dream book for me, but it's pretty bitter sweet having to leave Adventures. I really felt, it was a very well suited book for me and my style. Geoff and I enjoyed working on the book imensely, but I'm also looking forward to the challenges The Flash has in store for us. Thanks again folks for keeping tabs on my work really appreciate it!

Love the broad strokes it can do, I can be more expressive with the line work. These were done inside my 2009 art book. The Shield #2

Here's the cover to The Shield #2 which I got the opportunity to color myself. It was quite a learning experience once again. I actually messed up my settings from the start so I had to re adjust all the color palettes after I was completely done. Fun and frustrating all at once.

Sketchbooks and SDCC

Hey folks so here's the deal. I'll be attending San Diego Comic-Con from July 22-26 I'll be at table DD-09. I'll also be releasing my art book then. Unfortunately I'll only have about 200 copies or so at the con and I won't be taking any pre-orders, it will be first come first serve. I'll probably do some pre-done books with the popular characters like batman, superman etc. if you have a special request just try to hit me up at my table early and I'll put you down on the list. The books will be $25, or $60 with a simple sketch. The book is 8.75"x 11.25" hard cover, with a dust jacket, and 24 pages of my ink wash work and some full color. But the whole book is printed in color to maximize the clarity and integrity of the original black and white ink wash and water color. I'll make the books available online once I receive the rest of my shipment which wont happen until after SDCC, so keep an eye out for an update about online ordering. Here are some crude photo's of my artist proof of the book. (note the pages are in the wrong order in this proof but has been corrected in the final printing). Anyways hope to see some of you guys there!

Joe Shuster Awards Poster

Agnes and I got the honor to draw the poster image for this years Joe Shuster Awards. It's a collaboration piece so it was drawn in separate parts which we put together afterwards. I'll post up the final image with her part in it once they release the image. For now this is one of the portions of the poster that I had done. We decided to go with the original designs for Superman to really achieve that retro feel since this image will be a poster within the poster. The background was inspired by Darwyn Cooke's original poster for the awards inaugural year.

Inks with a #2 Escoda brush. The washes were done with Reeves watercolor Ivory black. Colors done in photoshop. I scanned a page from my brown sketchbook and layered it under the image to create that textured look as well as grabbed some aged paper textures from [link] great site for free resources for things like this! I really wanted that old school feel to it so I went very minimal with the color rendering. Pretty happy with the end result. It kinda made me itchy to color more of my work in the future.

hey folks here's a preview of the first few pages from Adventure Comics. I drew these last year before I started Superman Batman and I actually drew them as "test pages" with the ink wash style. Hence the brush and pen work with inks rather than just brush which I've fully converted to now. The neat thing about it is that Geoff loved the pages enough to write it into the story as is! So now this is the opening sequence to the book! How much more could I love Geoff for doing this? NOT enough! It was very indicative of how collaborative a writer he is with his artist's so I'm really pumped to be COLLABORATING with him! Here are the layouts I sent to my editor before starting work on the cover for Red Robin. They wanted me to do an iconic shot of Red Robin, nothing too overly complicated. I believe the description was iconic action shot with a stark color background.
The layouts are probably around 3 inches in height each in pencil and colors were done in either painter or photoshop...I can't really remember.

looks like it's also on the stands a lot sooner than I thought! Release date is May 20th! The piece was inked with #2 brush with ink wash, watercolor and gouache and white ink for some of the highlights. Awesome colors provided by Brian Buccellato.

Origins and Omens pg 6 process

ok so it looks like almost everyone is caught up now on the big reveal at the end of Origins and Omens in Adventure Comics #0. If not don't scroll down. :-)

So here's the process work that went into the last page. Pencils with a .05 mechanical pencil with HB lead. Inks with #2 and #3 brush. and some .03 tech pen action here and there. Washes were done with ink and water colour.

I got these in my inbox today from Livesay. Even though I'm currently tackling inks and washes on my own I still miss working with Liv. His attention to detail is just insane everytime I got Legion pages back from him there is so much more to see on the original that wasn't printed, so many intricacies in his line work that is totally lost unless you're one of the lucky few to see it full size. Whenever I come to my senses and go back to traditional pencils I know who the first call I'll make to!

Sorry folks for the lack of updates around here, I promise you I'm not on vacation. I've been hard at work stockpiling art for my new projects. Once a few of them have been announced I'll have a ton of stuff to show. I'm also having an absolute ball with all my work right now so consider me a very happy boy! I'm really excited with the forthcoming year, if all goes according to plan I'll have a short story coming up, as well as a two parter on a super dope book, a cool ass ongoing and some cover gigs. Needless to say DC is keeping me very busy, but very happy! I've also started attending a digital painting class so I'll be posting those up as well, soon as I have something that is half decent enough to show. Anyways enjoy this little sliver of a preview, I hope I don't get into trouble for showing these but I have an interview coming out soon which will show most of these images in full so keep a watch out for that!

Hey folks ok here's the deal. I'm finished with Legion of Superheroes and have a bit of down time before I start my next project so I'll be opening up a limited amount of commissions for one week. How many? I'm not sure. We'll take names and I'll chip away at the list and see how far we can go before I need to stop. I'll get as many done as I can, however if I don't get it done by the time my next project starts I won't be able to carry a list forward (sorry about that). With regards to the price it will be $350 USD for one character with minimal background and an additional $75USD for an extra character which I will cap at 4 max (keep in mind the size constraint of the image space so the more characters you want the smaller they'll be in order to fit them in). Full payment will be expected once we've let you know that I'll be starting your commission (basically we'll put your name on the list and when I've accepted the commission and am about to begin work you will be informed of the status and payment will be requested). The art will be done on 11"x14" smooth bristol and I'll be doing it in black and white ink with gray tone washes. With regards to the subject matter I would prefer it be well known established characters. And to be quite honest I will more than likely cherry pick the ones that appeal to me most. Lastly I will retain rights to the image (basically if I want to put in a sketch book or something I would like to do so at my discretion. If we do, we'll send you a free copy :) ) With regards to shipping cost that will be at your expense see the info below. Legion 48 preview

Five simple lines.....

I remember my first couple years as a professional artist. Doing the convention circuit, sketching and signing for fans. I sat by Mike many times and was in awe of his beautiful sketches, not only were they awesome he'd also do them so fast! I'd look and struggled along drawing one face as he'd drawn 3-4. So I asked him "hey Mike how do you draw the faces so accurately but so fast?" He broke down the profile shot for me with five simple lines. At this point in my artistic endeavor there were many things I struggled over but when Mike showed me this technique it blew my mind with it's simplicity and is something I still use today. Every profile shot you see me draw, those are Mikes lines.

This past Friday the industry lost an amazing talent. He gave everything he had to this industry we love even though the steps were painful he did it all with a smile. He truly was a hero and someone to look up to in every sense of the word. His outlook on life and positive attitude was something we all wished we had a bit of. This past Friday the industry lost an icon, a lot of us lost a friend.

We miss you Mike.

7 Guerrières Release Date and Preview

May 21st, 2008 will be the release date in France. I know it's already been translated for an Italian edition, but I'm not sure when that will come out or any other translations for that matter. Check out the Editions Delcourt website for a 7 page preview! (click on the arrow under the cover image to see interior pages) Once all the books are out you can put all seven of the books into this awesome slip case. They did a fantastic job designing this thing and I'm really humbled to have been a part of it!

Pittsburgh Comic Con

This was a drawing I did for a dear friend and talent colorist Beth Sotelo. She asked me if I wanted to do a print with her and of course I jumped at the chance and I'm glad I did since she did a killer job. I however could have done better, I was only able to work on this for a couple of hours since I had the flu at the time and I was too busy with the chills. Anyways I think the final result came out pretty well due to Beth colors. She'll have these babies available at the NYC con this weekend so if you're going look her up! go Beth! www.bethsotelo.com

Legion 44 cover

Hey folks just quick post today. Here's the cover to issue 44 for the Legion of Super-Heroes along with the layouts that I submitted to my editor before I started the page. I had a lot of fun noodling with the background I tried to go for that illustrated type rendering and I think it came out ok!

Legion 40

Ok so I'm pretty sure Legion 40 came out today so here's a little preview. I tried something a little different this issue and really went for that traditional panel layouts and not too many bleeds at all (similar to my work on Sept Guerrieres). I'm not quite sure if I pulled it off right since it feels like a bit of the dynamics of my art was toned down and that was one of the things I really wanted to infuse into this book. Hopefully in the future I'll have a better balance of both. On a side note the colors of Sept Guerrieres were finished last week so I'll post some of that on here soon!

Sept Guerrieres Update

Hey folks haven't updated in a while. I thought I'd give an update on Sept Guerrieres, my upcoming graphic novel from French publisher Editions-Delcourt. It's in the coloring stages right now and they are expecting to have the book published around May. I don't have the exact date but as soon as I do I'll make sure to post it. Wow been a while since I last updated. After the holidays I came down with a really bad flu which took a few days to recover. Needless to say I lost quite a few days from work which I've been working hard to try and get back on track. Anyways issue 38 of the Legion should be out this Wednesday and I wanted to post a preview. I don't think I'll be doing a panel a day like I did for 37 without spoiling the story so I'll be going back to posting previews here and there.
